Many writers are inspired by music, and James Baldwin was evidently no exception.
He publicly credited Bessie Smith’s records for letting him write Go Tell It on the Mountain, according to Literary Hub, and he left a considerable record collection behind when he died.
That collection is now a Spotify playlist, with almost five hundred songs running thirty-two hours total.
Credit is due to Ikechúkwú Onyewuenyi, a curator at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, for compiling “chez baldwin” on Spotify.
