Congratulations to Damon Galgut, winner of the 2021 Booker Prize!

His nomination for The Promise was his third; the win for it, his first.

The novel tells the story of a white family in South Africa, as the country transitions out of apartheid.

The Swart family shrinks over the course of the novel, reuniting from its scattered lives, at four funerals.

Judges described The Promise as “a spectacular demonstration of how the novel can make us see and think afresh” and “a strong, unambiguous commentary on the history of South Africa and of humanity itself that can best be summed up in the question: does true justice exist in this world?”.

Galgut takes home, in addition to the copious praise, a cash prize of £50,000 (about $68,400).

He was considered the favorite to win the Booker by several oddsmakers.
