When writer Alexander Chee moved in with his boyfriend five years ago, they did some minor culling of their possessions so everything would fit in the apartment.

But it wasn’t until recently that Chee gave some thought to the fact that they’d never really combined books.

Why was that, Chee wondered — and was it normal?

He ponders the first question and shares his research into the second question in an essay for The Morning News.
