The 2022 Booker Prize shortlist has been revealed and includes a record.
The Guardian reports that Alan Garner, at age eighty-seven, is the oldest author to have been shortlisted.
He's also the only British author still in the running for one of the English language's most prestigious literary prizes.
Unfortunately, the competition won't be a tale of two extreme ages, as the youngest-ever nominee (Leila Mottley, then just twenty) is no longer in the running.
Here are the six books competing for a £50,000 ($69,000) purse; the winner will be revealed October 17.
-
Glory, by NoViolet Bulawayo.
-
The Trees, by Percival Everett.
-
Treacle Walker, by Alan Garner.
-
The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida, by Shahan Karunatilaka.
-
Small Things Like These, by Claire Keegan.
-
Oh William!, by Elizabeth Strout.
