There are any number of reasons that viewers might be unhappy with a screen adaptation of a beloved book.
With The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, which builds on J.R.R. Tolkien's characters but doesn't directly adapt material, that reason has turned out to be ... diversity.
Variety reports that the show's cast has issued a statement in response to what it called "relentless racism, threats, harassment, and abuse" aimed at the non-white members.
Cast members from the Lord of the Rings movies had previously also shared messages supporting the show's diversity.
With Amazon not posting any reviews for the show on its sites, viewers angry about the inclusivity of the cast have "review-bombed" the show elsewhere — in other words, they've flooded other sites with negative reviews to drag it down.
