Author George R.R. Martin has given the world a progress update on his long-awaited next novel in the Song of Ice and Fire series.

The Winds of Winter — book number six — is about three-quarters of the way done, Martin said in a recent interview.

But, he acknowledged, three-quarters isn't 100 percent — and he'll have to revise everything he's already written, of course.

Vice, which reported on Martin's latest comments, contrasted them with a particular segment of his fandom.

Youtuber Preston Jacobs, who's leading a collaborative fan fiction project to write The Winds of Winter, released a video in June that analyzed GRRM's progress.

Jacobs argued that his so-called progress to date contained about two hundred pages of material cut from A Dance with Dragons, plus another two hundred draft pages.

Whether you believe Jacobs or Martin, though, the conclusion is roughly the same: that GRRM has certainly made progress, but that the finish line is still in the distance.
