The Strand magazine's John Steinbeck issue has reprinted a rarely seen work from the Grapes of Wrath author.
The Associated Press reports that the 1954 column, originally written for French newspaper Le Figaro, came as a response to a question that Steinbeck kept hearing during his time living in France.
That question: “What about McCarthyism?”
In the column, Steinbeck responds that it was a very old urge, found in any democracy but "latent," for government by law to be replaced with government by men.
That said, Steinbeck was certainly no fan of communism.
Read more on Steinbeck's comments on democracy at that time in the AP article (or even more by buying The Strand's issue).
