On this day in 1920, Clarice Lispector — considered one of Brazil's most important literary figures — was born.

Her fame was born of her novels, but in the last decade of her life, she reached readers through another medium: a weekly newspaper column.

Her crônicas, on a wide range of topics, have been translated into English and came out in a book called Too Much of Life: The Complete Crônicas this fall.

Before that, though, the Paris Review shared passages from a selection of Lispector's columns for your reading pleasure.
