Author Nikki Grimes hasn't lived the career she would've predicted.

But that's okay — heck, it's better than okay.

She was mentored by James Baldwin as a teenager and encouraged by Toni Morrison as a young adult.
So ... she didn't expect to become a children's author.

When she did, though, she did it wholeheartedly.

Grimes began 2022 by winning the ALA Coretta Scott King-Virginia Hamilton Award for Lifetime Achievement, one of the most prestigious awards in children's literature.

And she concluded it with the release of her 103rd book, Garvey in the Dark, a novel in verse.
