The more things change, the more they really don't.

BookTok has emerged as a popular gathering place for readers — and, thus, for authors, too.

But Slate's piece on the heavy use of tropes as hashtags, particularly in romance, highlights some of the drawbacks of the strategy.

It noted how Twilight and The Hunger Games inspired (or were at the front of) a wave of vampire romances or dystopian sagas, respectively ... both trends that have since died out.

Slate also brought up a more contemporary cautionary tale, mentioning that one author's comment about writing to a particular hashtagged trope prompted some ire among readers.

At any rate, if you're skeptical about BookTok and online influencers, you'll certainly want to check out Slate's piece on the BookTok trope-ification debate.
