In Cold Blood is the first modern true-crime book.

And even at the time it came out, before the genre could also gather momentum in other mediums like podcasts and TV shows, it stirred up some moral uneasiness in its author.

Janice Hallett, a journalist who's also written mystery novels, explores this debate among true-crime authors from Truman Capote to the late Michelle McNamara, over striking the right balance between entertainment and accuracy ... and respect for the victims.
