Illinois has become the first state in the nation to have a law banning book bans.
Specifically, Gov. JB Pritzker signed legislation that cuts off funding to libraries that remove books currently on their shelves over "partisan or doctrinal" reasons.
Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias, a Democrat like Pritzker and Illinois's legislature, spearheaded the bill because of increased attempts to ban books in certain school districts.
The law takes effect January 1, 2024.
