The thought of a website dedicated exclusively to talking about books you've read and hope to read might have sounded like heaven a decade ago.

But Goodreads has turned into a weapon in the hands of some users, say authors and publishers.

The New York Times spoke to and about authors from all career stages who have watched their books sink under "review-bombing" campaigns — ones in which the bad reviews flood in and overwhelm any good ones — on Goodreads.

In some cases, the vitriol (or, rarely, the praise) comes even before the book can be read.

That, unfortunately, is still good for Goodreads; engagement and interaction are king in the social media world.

Head to the NY Times to read about the minefield that is Goodreads.
