The Booker Prize buzz this year is all about the Irish.
The Guardian notes that one-third of the 2023 longlist is Irish — a first — and that the thirty-seven Irish writers who have been honored throughout the prize's history make Ireland the most-nominated country, relative to population size.
The other number of note for this year: four debut novelists and six repeat nominees.
Here are the thirteen books competing for the £50,000 (about $63,900) prize, to be announced November 26:
-
A Spell of Good Things by Ayọ̀bámi Adébáyọ̀
-
Old God’s Time by Sebastian Barry
-
Study for Obedience by Sarah Bernstein
-
If I Survive You by Jonathan Escoffery
-
How to Build a Boat by Elaine Feeney
-
This Other Eden by Paul Harding
-
Pearl by Siân Hughes
-
All the Little Bird-Hearts by Viktoria Lloyd-Barlow
-
Prophet Song by Paul Lynch
-
In Ascension by Martin MacInnes
-
Western Lane by Chetna Maroo
-

The Booker shortlist will be announced September 21; shortlisted authors will receive £2,500 (about $3,200) and a specially bound edition of their book.
