The name of a show that's exceeding expectations at San Diego's La Jolla Playhouse says it all.
The Untitled, Unauthorized Hunter S. Thompson Musical isn't your typical biopic, says the composer-lyricist who was commissioned nearly two decades ago to write it.
Joe Iconis didn't want to — and doesn't try to — sugarcoat anything that Thompson said or did.
"I want to put this complex, challenging man at the center of this story, and not make any bones about the fact that he is complex and challenging," he told the Los Angeles Times.
Evidently, that goal is speaking to theatergoers.
The Untitled, Unauthorized Hunter S. Thompson Musical hasn't even premiered yet, but ticket sales are already strong enough that another week of performances was scheduled.
