The shortlist for the 2023 BBC National Short Story Award has been revealed.

The themes of these tales are decidedly modern, notes The Bookseller, including climate change, the immigrant experience, and social media's clash with privacy.

Two finalists were previously named among Granta’s Best Young British Novelists, and another is a bestselling author debuting her short-story skills.

Those finalists are:

The BBC National Short Story Award is considered among the most prestigious prizes of its type; it grants its winner £15,000 (about $18,700) and £600 (about $750) to each of the shortlisted authors.

This year's winner will be revealed September 23.
