Celebrities from other arenas are lending their voices to the fight against book bans.
The Guardian reports that LeVar Burton, of Reading Rainbow fame, is spearheading the open letter calling on Hollywood to use its star power to promote the freedom to read.
Among the 175 signatories are Ariana Grande, Guillermo del Toro, Mark Ruffalo, Idina Menzel, Gabrielle Union, Padma Lakshmi, Andy Cohen, Judd Apatow, and Sharon Stone.
"We cannot stress enough how these censorious efforts will not end with book bans," the letter states.
Later, it declares that "as artists, we must band together, because a threat to one form of art is a threat to us all."
September is National Banned Book Month, and Banned Books Week is October 1-7 this year.
