Mark Twain 129, Jane Austen 122.

It certainly wasn't the easiest path to literary glory for Mark Twain, our first Book Brawl champion.

Twain, a No. 10 seed, beat JRR Tolkien, Ernest Hemingway, Patricia Cornwell, William Shakespeare, Dr. Seuss and Jane Austen to prevail.

To those who doubted him, thought he could never pull it off, Twain replied:

"It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt."
