We have a sad update to Sunday’s post on embezzlement at a literary agency: Chuck Palahniuk, one of its clients, is “close to broke” because of the alleged theft.

The Fight Club author posted a statement on his website detailing how for years, as his income stream slowly dried up, he thought he was going crazy:

(T)his entire time an idea nagged at me: What if someone's stealing?

But that, that was insanity.  I've worked with the same team of people since 1994.  To suspect anyone was stealing, I had to be crazy.

And then I wasn't.

Palahniuk thanked a number of people — friends, family members, fans, business associates — for their financial and emotional support in the aftermath, saying at least he was rich in that sense.

Darin Webb, an accountant at Donadio & Olson in New York, was charged on May 15 with “defraud[ing] a literary agency during his engagement as that agency’s bookkeeper, by converting funds that belonged to the agency and its clients to his own use” to the tune of $3.4 million.

Webb, 47, is in custody and faces twenty years in jail if convicted on all charges.
