Flowers In The Attic’s critical reception never came close to matching its commercial one.
That said, V.C. Andrews’s creepy tale of children held hostage by a conniving mother has at least one silver lining: It influenced authors like Gillian Flynn, whose novel Sharp Objects is now a TV show.
“Anyone who reads Sharp Objects will certainly see a little of the Flowers influence in there,” Flynn said in 2014.
“I had a dime-store copy that had been passed around my friends. I still read it once a year or something, if I’m between books.”
And she’s definitely not the only one. Several modern authors described how Flowers’s “horrific fairy-tale” elements affected them in a piece in The Guardian.
The article also explores how Andrews’s own life inspired some of the common themes of her writing, including captivity — read it in full here.
