If you’re planning a road trip soon — or wish you could but can’t get away — a new novel might be just the ticket for you.

America for Beginners tells the story of Pival Sengupta, a recent Indian widow of means who books a trip ostensibly to see America but in reality to search for the son whom her late husband had cast out upon learning he was gay.

Listen to Weekend Edition’s Scott Simon interview author Leah Franqui about the book or check out the transcript on NPR’s website.
