If you had to guess which genre of books yielded the best romantic partners, what would you predict?

Here are your choices (and yes, we’re burying the lead so you’ll click through): classics, contemporary literary fiction, romance, fantasy, science fiction, suspense/thriller, and horror.

The winners, according to the study published in the magazine Psychology of Aesthetics, Creativity, and the Arts, were ... science fiction and fantasy!

Researchers measured adult readers’ exposure to the seven genres listed above, by asking them to identify authors who specialize in each.

They then asked the participants to fill out a survey on unrealistic relationship beliefs: “Disagreement is destructive; mindreading is expected; romantic partners cannot change; the sexes are different; and the expectation of sexual perfection.”

The results showed that readers with higher exposure to science fiction and fantasy works were less likely to agree with the unhelpful attitudes.

See how the other genres fared in the full article at Pacific Standard, which also includes a link to the original article.
