The centennial celebration for J.D. Salinger is starting soon ... but not everyone is cheering.
New editions of Salinger’s works will be released in November, a few months before what would have been his one-hundredth birthday (January 1, 2019), reports the Los Angeles Times.
Out now, however, is an essay from an author who had a brief affair with Salinger when he was in his fifties and she was a teen.
Joyce Maynard’s 1998 memoir, At Home in the World, which discusses their relationship, received scathing reviews upon its publication.
But now, with the #MeToo movement, she wrote in The New York Times that she believes the work would have been received differently today:
In the decades since I published my story about those days and their enduring effect on my life, I have received many letters from readers.
Some are from women with chillingly similar stories to share, of powerful older men who, when these women were very young, captured their exceedingly naïve trust, as well as their hearts, and altered the course of their lives.
