Hungry? Reading this review of Leo Tolstoy’s family cookbook may or may not help.

The War and Peace author adopted a rather strict diet after a midlife crisis — no smoking, drinking, meat, or cake, among other restrictions.

As a joke, his wife’s brother compiled the recipes she adopted to accommodate his new regimen.

A few years ago, that cookbook was not only published, but also translated into English as Leo Tolstoy: A Vegetarian’s Tale.

The Guardian’s Marianna Hunt describes some of the recipes that she found and tested out here.
