Your Friday warm-and-fuzzy news is here: Actress Viola Davis is bringing new life to the children’s book Corduroy.

Davis has written a sequel, titled Corduroy Takes A Bow, to the fifty-year-old story.

Part of her inspiration, she told Morning Edition’s David Greene, was that reading provided her an escape from the poverty of her childhood.

And Corduroy, in particular, holds special significance for her: Lisa, the bear’s friend, is black.

You can listen to Davis discuss her book below or read the interview highlights on NPR’s website.
