We’re constantly seeing North Korea in the news nowadays, but many of us know very little about how we got to where we are today.

Historian Hampton Sides has written a book that can certainly remedy that.

On Desperate Ground: The Marines at the Reservoir, the Korean War's Greatest Battle analyzes one particularly brutal dead-of-winter fight that aimed to unify North and South Korea.

Sides discusses his new book as well as the current state of affairs with North Korean on NPR’s Morning Edition.

You can listen to him talk with Steve Inskeep below or read a transcript of the conversation here.
