A publicist isn’t in every author’s budget, but if you’re able to outsource your marketing, you’ll want to make sure you invest your money wisely.

Just like with any contractor, you shouldn’t hire the first and only one you interview, says Joan Stewart.

Talk to at least three, if not four, and make sure there’s an actual spoken conversation.

It can be by Skype or phone, but the important thing is to hear how the publicist will sound to a journalist fielding dozens of other pitches.
