Like all of us, Alice Walker is worried about the future — so she’s taking action.

She told NPR’s Scott Simon that with her new book of poetry, Taking the Arrow Out of the Heart, she’s hoping to make us all “aware of what we are inflicting on each other, and especially on the children.”

The book collects sixty-nine poems in both English and Spanish — the latter because she lives part of the year in Mexico and wants to share her work with her friends despite her struggles to learn Spanish.

You can listen to the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award-winning author below or read a transcript of her interview on NPR’s website.
