Prolific translator Anthea Bell, whose work covered multiple languages and age ranges, has passed away at the age of 82, according to The Guardian.

Bell is celebrated for translating the French comic book series Asterix into English, along with many other classic fairytale authors.

At the same time, she translated works by Franz Kafka, Sigmund Freud, and WG Sebald’s novel about the Kindertransport, Austerlitz.

The Guardian notes that in addition to French and German, she taught herself Danish over the course of a single Christmas.

Her accomplishments, fortunately, were well recognized throughout her lifetime; among them were the Schlegel Tieck Prize for translation from German, the Independent Foreign Fiction Prize, the Helen and Kurt Wolff Prize, and the 2003 Austrian State Prize for Literary Translation.

You can read her own observations about her career in interviews she did with a fellow translator and The Guardian.
