Start your morning off right, with an interview about cooking and culture.

Carla Hall, co-host of The Chew and two-time competitor on Top Chef, has written a book on soul food and its significance, both for her and for African-Americans as a whole.

Carla Hall's Soul Food: Everyday and Celebration includes recipes, of course, but also dispels the myth that soul food is just the delicious but deep-fried dishes that most of us recognize, and discusses how Hall’s formal training as a chef affected her relationship with it.

You can listen to the interview with Morning Edition’s David Greene below or read an edited transcript on NPR’s website.
