The Collins Dictionary has chosen “single-use” as its word of the year.

(At least it has for the United States — across the pond, "gammon" was the winner.)

We were frankly a bit surprised that it beat out “gaslighting” and “#MeToo,” which were among the runners-up.

But evidently, usage of the word — an adjective applied to items “whose unchecked proliferation are blamed for damaging the environment and affecting the food chain” — has increased fourfold in the past five years.

What does that say about us? See the cynical and sunny interpretations at Quartz.
