When Kate DiCamillo moved from Florida to Minnesota, she didn’t have socks, a jacket, or a dog.
She likely acquired the first two items fairly quickly, but she invented the third — one who became the title character of her future book, Because of Winn-Dixie.
That was nearly twenty years ago, and DiCamillo’s imagination is still going strong.
NPR’s Euan Kerr recently attended a party celebrating the launch of her latest book, Louisiana's Way Home, and chatted with both DiCamillo and a friend about the author’s knack for connecting with children and adults alike.
