In The Age of Miracles, author Karen Thompson Walker wove the typical tribulations of growing up into the larger-scale tension of a natural disaster (namely: the gradual slowing of the earth's rotation).

She’s done it again with The Dreamers, in which a mysterious disease spreads through a small college town. The novel releases January 15.

Walker explains what draws her to such fantastical realism, along with other aspects of her writing process, in an interview with Goodreads.
