Researching a novel can take on many different forms.

There’s the staid image of paging through nonfiction books at a library, learning about professions not your own or eras you never lived in.

And then there’s flying to Israel to see the real-life world of surreptitiously raising pigs.

Author Amanda Sthers did just that for her novel Holy Lands, previously written in French, just released in English, and also adapted into a movie starring James Caan and Rosanna Arquette.

Holy Lands is the story of an aging cardiologist who physically leaves New York and metaphorically leaves his sick ex-wife and openly gay son to raise pigs in Israel.

Sthers talked to Weekend Edition’s Scott Simon about her unusual protagonist; you can listen below or read a transcript on NPR’s website.
