We close the workweek on a sad note: bestselling, prolific, and somewhat mysterious author W.E.B. Griffin has died at the age of eighty-nine.

Griffin estimated that he had published more than one hundred fifty books, some as Griffin (itself a pen name), others under different pseudonyms, and still more as a ghostwriter, according to the New York Times.

Among his best-known works are The Lieutenants, which launched the nine-novel Brotherhood of War series; Badge of Honor; and Clandestine Operations. All were written under the Griffin name.

His son confirmed Griffin’s February 12 death to the New York Times, whose obituary you can read here.
