The accolades haven’t stopped for Harper Lee, who was inducted into the Alabama Women’s Hall of Fame yesterday.

(Before you demand to know why it took so long, take a breath: the Hall of Fame requires that its inductees be deceased for at least two years before they’re considered.)

Joy Brown — the woman who, along with her husband, gave Lee a financial gift that allowed her to quit her job and focus on writing a novel — officially inducted the To Kill a Mockingbird author into the HOF.

In her speech, she mentioned the role that “dumb chance” had played in ultimately funding Lee’s novel-writing; read about the specific incident that she’s referring to, plus more praise from those who knew Lee, in the Birmingham News.
