From the outside, one might imagine that residents of violent neighborhoods are just accustomed to the injuries and deaths.
That isn’t the case, though, says writer Alex Kotlowitz.
His new book, An American Summer: Love And Death In Chicago, looks at those affected by shootings in the Windy City in 2013 — survivors, perpetrators, and their loved ones, as well as witnesses.
Kotlowitz wants us to think of these smaller-scale, daily events the same way we do the mass ones that make national headlines.
He wants us to wonder, each time, how the tragedy could’ve happened, how those affected can be helped, and how we can put an end to the violence.
