Writer Namwali Serpell’s debut novel, The Old Drift, weaves magic into realism and fiction into history.

Which is fitting, as Serpell comes from Zambia, one of the many countries whose arbitrary borders result in a rich mix of culture. (The Old Drift is also set there.)

Serpell recently discussed this intertwining and the concept of borders in an interview with Weekend Edition’s Scott Simon.

You can listen to their conversation below or read a transcript on NPR’s website.
