With the recent release of the Man Booker International Prize shortlist, it seems like a good time to dive into the world of literary translators.

The Guardian has an in-depth piece examining the relationship between authors and translators, including chats with writer Olga Tokarczuk, who won the prize last year and is on this year’s short list, and author Ma Jian, whose wife translates his work.

And it reminds us that the translation isn’t simply a matter of replacing words with other words — the gender of the writer and translator, as well as the culture of the original text, must be taken into consideration.

Grab a warm beverage (we’re cold in the Midwest today) and a comfy seat to learn more about the extraordinary effort that goes into expanding our literary horizons.
