Fans of science fiction and of potato chips both have reason to mourn today.

Gene Wolfe, who wrote The Book of the New Sun and also helped design the machine that produces Pringles, has died at the age of eighty-seven.

In announcing the news Monday, his publisher, Tor, noted that The Book of the New Sun placed third in a recent poll of best fantasy novels — behind only The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.
