National Poetry Month may be over, but the celebration of the art form isn’t quite over.

Tonight, nine high-schoolers from around the United States will compete in Poetry Out Loud — as NPR describes it, “a kind of annual spelling bee for poetry.”

The teens have advanced through several rounds of competition for their chance to dazzle judges by reciting classic and contemporary poems they’ve memorized.

The champion receives $20,000, followed by $10,000 for the runner-up and $5,000 for the third-place finisher.

Meet some of these incredible students and learn their stories on NPR.
