Congratulations are in order for two authors who received prestigious literary prizes yesterday!
The Guardian was no doubt pleased to report that one of its staffers, Aida Edemariam, received the Royal Society of Literature’s Ondaatje Prize.
The prize honors a “distinguished work of fiction, non-fiction or poetry, evoking the spirit of a place” and earns its recipient £10,000 ($12,900).
Edemariam’s winning work is The Wife’s Tale, a biography of her grandmother who was born in northern Ethiopia more than a century ago and married at the age of eight.
Also last night, the British Book Awards bestowed its top honor on Sally Rooney for her second novel, Normal People.
While Rooney wasn’t a classic upset — Normal People has accumulated several award nominations while winning a handful of them — she did face stiff competition in the form of Michelle Obama’s bestselling Becoming and Anna Burns’s Man Booker-winning Milkman.
