The New York Times headline, which we wish we’d written on our own, was “at a loss for words.”

The story? That the Scripps National Spelling Bee lacked enough challenging words to winnow the field of champions.

After the seventeenth round, the official pronouncer declared that the spelling bee would only go on for three more rounds, which is when they’d run out of tough words.

Each of the eight spellers standing at that moment continued to shine, meaning that all of them were crowned co-champions and received the $50,000 cash prize and a Scripps Cup.

It’s the first time in its ninety-plus-year history that the contest has celebrated multiple winners.
