Should you or should you not write what you know?

Author Mary Miller tiptoed down the middle of that in her new novel, Biloxi.

In an interview with Ari Shapiro, she acknowledges the similarities — and also acknowledges her reluctance to do so.

Louis McDonald Jr. and Miller both live on the Gulf Coast with a dog and limited human connections, though Miller’s excuse for the latter is that she recently moved to a new town, not that she drives people away by with blunt speech (as the character Louis does).

And Miller, at least as evidenced by her interview, has a much more cheerful disposition than Louis.

Meet the pair of them by listening below or read an article adapted from the conversation on NPR’s website.
