BBC Books is removing one author’s work from an upcoming Doctor Who anthology because of comments he made about the transgender community.

Gareth Roberts, who has written episodes as well as tie-in stories, made the announcement himself in a post on Medium, and the publisher confirmed the facts.

Roberts referenced tweets he sent out in 2017 in the post and added that he doesn’t believe in “gender identity.”

He said he was told that while he would still be paid for his contribution to the anthology, his work would be pulled to avoid a potential economically devastating boycott.

Reaction to the news has, of course, been mixed, with a transgender Doctor Who actor and a fellow anthology author both cheering Roberts’s removal and other prominent writers condemning it.

Doctor Who: The Target Storybook is due out in October.
