Ernest Hemingway may have died in Idaho, but the vast majority of his literary estate was in his Cuba home.

And at the time of his death — July 2, 1961 — political tension between the U.S. and Cuba was ramping up.

It took a great effort from his widow, Mary, to rescue Hemingway’s papers, a journey that’s detailed in a recent episode of the podcast Retropod.
