William "Bill" Wittliff, a writer who also gained fame with several award-winning screenplays, has died at the age of seventy-nine.
Wittliff helped write the TV adaptation of Larry McMurtry’s novel Lonesome Dove, along with the novelist, and also either wrote or co-wrote the hit movies The Perfect Storm and Legends of the Fall.
Before his Hollywood days, Wittliff and his wife founded The Encino Press, a publishing company that specialized in tales about Texas and the Southwest, in 1964; McMurtry was among the authors it published.
Wittliff also published several books of photography, such as Vaquero: Genesis of the Texas Cowboy, and novels including the Southwestern trilogy The Devil’s Backbone, The Devil’s Sinkhole, and The Devil’s Fork.
