A new documentary about Toni Morrison is coming to theaters on June 21.

Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am includes interviews with the author and many who know her well, including Oprah Winfrey, Russell Banks, and Fran Lebowitz, in covering her wide career as a writer and book editor.

Morrison is best known for Song of Solomon, which received the National Book Critics Circle Award, and Beloved, which won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction; she is also the first African-American woman to have won the Nobel Prize for Literature.

In the lead-up to the film’s release, Publishers Weekly interviewed its director, Timothy Greenfield-Sanders, about the challenges he faced in its production and the artistic decisions he made, among other topics.

Read his thoughts, watch the film’s official trailer, and learn more about the documentary.
