Here’s a how-to guide that we hope you never need, though it sounds like an intriguing read regardless: Prison: A Survival Guide.

The upcoming book from former UK inmate Carl Cattermole first saw life as a photocopied manuscript — nothing formal.

But as those thousand original copies circulated, they gained considerable interest — and high-profile attention.

Penguin is releasing an updated version of it, so in addition to Cattermole’s advice on preparing food in cells, nabbing your own cell, and finding the choicest jobs, you’ll benefit from the experiences of other prisoners and their loved ones.

Preview more of Prison: A Survival Guide, which comes out tomorrow, in the Guardian.
