Congratulations are in order for Joy Harjo, who was just announced as the next U.S. poet laureate!
Harjo will become the first Native American (and Oklahoma resident) to hold this title when she officially takes over as the country’s “poetry ambassador” this fall.
"It's quite an honor," she said in an interview with NPR. "... I bear that honor on behalf of the people and my ancestors. So that's really exciting for me."
According to NPR, Harjo has written eight books of poetry, including one that won the American Book Award (In Mad Love and War), and will release a ninth one in August.
She has also written children’s and YA literature, in addition to a memoir.
